Whitewater Falls, North Carolina

Whitewater Falls in the Jocassee Gorge is near the North Carolina, South Carolina border. It may or may not be the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi, but it is one of the most impressive. Some claim that Amicalola Falls in Georgia is the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi. Amicalola Falls is also a very impressive waterfall.

Whitewater Falls is especially beautiful in the fall when the trees surrounding the falls in in full color.

A good view of the falls is just a short walk from the parking lot. The best view of the falls is from a viewing platform down the stairs. There are a lot of stairs (over 100) so so need to take your time. There are several resting places as you descend to you can sit and rest on the way down and on the way up. The view is worth the walk.

The falls are especially spectacular after a good rain.

This is a popular place. There is a day use fee for the use of the parking lot and the restroom. There is a volunteer host who keeps the place clean. It's worth paying the $2.00 for the upkeep of the area.
